GARDEN ALLOTMENT PROVISION IN SHETLAND

- NOTIFICATION OF INTEREST -

Shetland Islands Council is trying to identify the level of interest
throughout Shetland for the provision of allotments.

Allotments are collections of rented plots of land used for the growing of fruit, flowers and vegetables and sometimes the keeping of chickens. They are used to help families grow their own food to save money and supplement their diet.

Allotments are becoming increasingly popular with food costs rising and people being more concerned about where their food comes from. Allotments give you control over the conditions in which your food is grown and save you money.

Allotment gardening is also a good way of keeping fit and getting something extra for your efforts.

As can be seen from the pictures good quality vegetables can be grown in Shetland.

If you are interested in renting an allotment or would be willing to help with the development of allotments in your area can you please let us know by contacting Mary Lisk:

e-mail at mary.lisk@sic.shetland.gov.uk or

by writing to:-

Environment and Building Services, Infrastructure Services Department,
Shetland Islands Council, Grantfield, Lerwick , ZE1 ONT or

Telephone: (01595) 744 818.

The closing date for noting your interest is Monday 29 September 2008.

In the meantime if you have any queries or wish further information
please telephone Mary Lisk on (01595) 744818.
