A WIDE range of local businesses have benefited from the latest round
of grants approval’s made by the Shetland Islands Council’s economic
development unit.
The department said last night that almost £135,000 was awarded to
41 businesses during October.
Twenty nine awards, worth almost £50,000 were made towards the
agriculture industry, including £18,025 for the Scottish Agriculture
College to buy in further assistance to help crofters and farmers to
apply for financial support under the new Rural priorities scheme,
part of the Scottish Rural Development Contract programme.
Just over £63,000 were given to five aquaculture businesses,
including one salmon farm, a salmon processor, two mussel farms and
a net washing company.
A further £15,000 was awarded to seven companies under the marketing
development programme, including setting up two online shops for
businesses as diverse as knitwear and fisheries equipment.
Finally, a grant of £6,885 was offered to Hame fae Hame, a new
childcare business based in Scalloway. |

A spokesperson for the
council said all payments were being made in line with economic
development policy.
“The grants are intended to support development of the local economy
and improve the quality of life in Shetland,” he said.
He added that he also wanted to encourage local businesses to apply
for funding under the European LEADER programme which supported “new
and experimental approaches to rural development”.
