Hockey: Fast, furious and exciting

2 December 2008

Yet another Saturday evening of fast, furious, exciting hockey at the Clickimin saw two wins for Whalsay. LBC New Revolution and Hotspurs shared the honours in their very closely fought match.

Revolution started brightly with some slick passing play, leading to the first goal from their goal machine Kristan Robertson. Hotspurs could only look to the counter attack with Lindsey Manson scoring to bring it back to 1 v 1 at half time. The second half was more end to end at the start with the Revolution taking control again with a neat reverse hit from Stacey Laurenson. Then in the dying minutes another counter attack produced the killer equaliser for Hotspurs from Kevin Gifford.

Whalsay 4 v Spurs 1

This was a fast paced game with determined play from both teams. Whalsay took the lead with Ian Simpson scoring two goals in quick succession. In the second half, the referee had to calm the game as tension rose. Steven Henry in Spurs goal pulled several fantastic saves but was unable to stop Whalsay, who scored a further two goals through Fiona Dally and Ian Simpson. Spurs replied through Gayle Johnson.

Hotspurs 4 v Whalsay 5

The game started strongly with Whalsay driving forward with a well-practiced set piece. Ian Simpson was quick to open the scoring for his team with a well positioned strike. Hotspurs goalie Michelle Clarke made some excellent saves but Whalsay’s fortunes continued with a further 2 goals from Ian before half time.

The second half saw the Hotspurs team settle first as Lindsey Manson slotted in a quick goal from Joe O’Conner’s cross, this was followed quickly by Lindsey’s second. Richard Moar followed with a great shot on target. Whalsay were fast to return the attack and eased in a fourth goal by Bryan Irvine. Dawn Anderson and Jennifer Manson worked well in defence and a strong flick from O’Conner saw the goal of the match. Once again Whalsay turned the game around and their effective attacking provided them with their fifth goal, from Kirsti Leask. Marie Simpson denied Hotspurs a last chance of goal in the dying seconds of this hard fought game.

Full credit must go to Hotspurs’ Clark and Moar, making their indoor hockey debut. Best for Whalsay was Marie Simpson and Dawn Anderson stood out for Hotspurs. .
