In
memory of a life cut short
VAILA
May Harvey was a young Shetland lass, full of life and energy who
had many plans for the future.
But what most of us take for granted she was unable to enjoy.
Diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a form of leukaemia, in
October 2007, the 16 year old died in May last year.
It was a death that shocked Shetland, because – at the end - Vaila
did not die of cancer, but of a chest infection leading to
pneumonia.

place name in the islands…they all speak of our cultural connection
with Scandinavia and their most famous inhabitants, the Vikings. But
when did they come here? How did they interact with the indigenous
Picts? What did they do? All these questions remain unanswered.

“Go ahead and build Mareel!”
“As far as I am concerned you can go ahead and build Mareel.” With
those words Shetland Islands Council convener Sandy Cluness gave the
green light to the £9.3 million cinema and music venue Mareel in
Lerwick Town Hall yesterday morning.
A
crowd of around 50 supporters cheered with delight. Some wept, while
the colour drained from the faces of several of the nine councillors
who had voted against the cultural centre.

Probe to uncover the fate of Broo
A
LITTLE known archaeological project to uncover why, when and how a
thriving Shetland township was completely buried by rising sands has
just packed up for another year.
The township of Broo, located at the south end of the main isle, was
one of the largest and most important in Shetland before it was
decimated sometime between the mid 17th and early 18th century.

to 15 July, £4.25 per class.
Designed to help you maintain your body
strength and flexibility and help your
coordination.
Wear comfortable loose stretchy clothing and
you can work bare feet or in socks.
