The Shetland News website was first launched in November 1995, as the UK's first daily news paper published exclusively on the Internet. It takes its name from the highly-respected weekly newspaper published in Shetland between 1885 and 1963.

The website immediately attracted worldwide attention - readers from more than 50 countries logged on to read the latest news from Shetland. At its early height the website had between 20,000 and 30,000 readers (not hits) daily.

Unfortunately, in late 1999, the project had to be abandoned due to lack of funds, but was resurrected by Shetland News Agency in March 2003 on the rising tide of interest in the Internet for general news and media information. In April 2007, a complete redesign of the The Shetland News website was completed.

Shetland News Agency is Shetland's only freelance news service. Since its inception, in April 1990, the agency has provided a comprehensive daily news service to the local, national and international media from the UK's most northerly community.
