A NEW roundabout in Lerwick has won national fame as it features in next year’s calendar of the British Roundabout Appreciation Society.

Construction of the £650,000 roundabout might have been controversial at its time, but the president of the appreciation society, Kevin Beresford, thinks it is just wonderful.

“We chose this roundabout because of fts uniqueness and the fact that it is nearly the most northerly. I have never seen anything like this and I have travelled all over Britain,” he said.

It was design engineer Ian Smith of the council’s roads department who alerted Mr Beresford to the Oversund roundabout.

He added: “Because I am the president of this association, loads of people are sending me pictures of roundabouts from all over the world.

“I just got an order from Shetland Islands Council for 10 calendars,” he said, adding that if every one of the 22,000 islanders were to buy one of his calendars, he would be well pleased.

The calendar can be ordered on the association’s website at: www.roundaboutsofbritain.com
