A
NEW roundabout in Lerwick has won national fame as it features in
next year’s calendar of the British Roundabout Appreciation Society.
Construction of the £650,000 roundabout might
have been controversial at its time, but
the president of the appreciation society, Kevin Beresford, thinks
it is just wonderful.
“We chose this roundabout because of fts uniqueness and the fact
that it is nearly the most northerly. I have never seen anything
like this and I have travelled all over Britain,” he said. |

It was
design engineer Ian Smith of the council’s roads department who
alerted Mr Beresford to the Oversund roundabout.
He added: “Because I am the president of this association, loads of
people are sending me pictures of roundabouts from all over the
world.
“I just got an order from Shetland Islands Council for 10
calendars,” he said, adding that if every one of the 22,000
islanders were to buy one of his calendars, he would be well
pleased.
