SHETLAND MSP Tavish Scott will meet health minister Andy Kerr today (Wednesday)
to discuss the controversial changes proposed for the air ambulance service.
The Scottish Ambulance Service propose to transfer the contract to English Gama
Aviation with no permanent dedicated airborne ambulance based on Shetland.
Instead the new service will be run from the Scottish mainland with back up from
an oil industry helicopter based at Scatsta airport, near Sullom Voe Terminal.
Tavish Scott said: “Shetland patients moving safely, securely and speedily
between Shetland and Aberdeen is my objective. I have worked on this with NHS
Shetland, and many individual constituents have raised the issue with me. I
share their desire to see a suitable aircraft based in Shetland serving
Shetland’s needs.
“There remain important details to resolve. I recognise the importance of
Shetland Islands Council’s argument over the need for appropriate back-up cover.
This is particularly the case given the Scottish Ambulance Service’s proposal
includes the use of the BP rescue helicopter based at Scatsta. It is important
that the arrangements over the primary use of this aircraft are clarified.
Mr Scott added: “Shetland needs to have confidence in the proposals for the
islands’ air ambulance service. That is why I will be meeting with the health
minister today.”
