SHETLAND Women's Football Club held their first five-a-side hat tournament at
Clickimin on Saturday 4 November.
A reasonable turnout allowed five teams to be drawn in a round robin format
followed by play-offs. The teams were evenly matched throughout and it was clear
that the play-offs would be a close run thing. At the end of the initial round
Team C (Mean Machine) were sitting at the top of the table with eight points
closely followed by Team A (Anonymous) with seven, Team E with six and Team B
with five.
The final between Mean Machine & Anonymous was expected to be a tough match as
the two teams had a scoreline in the earlier rounds. Both teams showed good
skill and fitness and the pace of the game was constant throughout with various
goal scoring opportunities for both sides, which were defended well.
It was in the middle of the second half that the deadlock was broken when Mean
Machine managed to link the ball down the centre and into the Anonymous goal.
The game ended 1 -0 to Mean Machine.
1st - Mean Machine:- Sarah Couper (GK), Pauline Walterson, Lara Jamieson, Donna
Murray, Heather Hogg; 2nd - Anonymous:- Josie Jamieson, Anne Smith, Helen Grant,
Stacey Laurenson, Julie Sandilands (GK)
The third and fourth play-off was equally close with both teams working hard.
The first goal went to Team E but Team B fought back in the second half to
equalise 1-1 and take the game to penalties.
Jessica Bradley gave a strong performance in goals for Team B saving three
penalties before Sarah Grogan managed to slot one into the net. Mhari Moncrieff
started well in goals for Team E by saving the first penalty but good strikes
from Freda Nicolson, Lisa Smith and Brenda Leask secured a 4 - 2 win for Team B.
3rd - Team B:- Jessica Bradley, Maggie Irvine, Lisa Smith, Freda Nicolson,
Brenda Leask;
4th - Team E:- Dawn Manson, Karen Jarvie, Sarah Grogan, Alison Williamson, Mhari
Moncrieff;
5th - Wilma's Wanderer's:- Wilma Sim, Kristan Robertson, Katrina Sandison, Karen
MacKelvie, Fiona Hurson.
The positive feedback received from everyone in attendance means that the club
will look to making this a regular event.
SWFC chairwoman Karen MacKelvie finished by thanking the organisers, referees
(Derrick Bradley & Sarah Couper) and all those who attended.
