POLICE in Shetland are advising drivers that it is now an offence to overtake
when heading into Lerwick from the north at the Blackhill.
They said that a double solid white line now prevents vehicles from crossing
into the centre lane of the three lane A970 carriageway.
The change was made following a serious road accident this year and several
recent complaints about high speed overtaking.
Sergeant Gary McCarthy said: "Any motorist caught overtaking on a double solid
white line faces a fixed penalty fine of £60 and three penalty points being
endorsed on their licence.
"Police officers will be monitoring the area and dealing with offenders in the
appropriate manner."
Meanwhile, police said that they had charged two motorists with using a mobile
phone while driving, during the last two days.
