Looking for missing millions
ISLES MP Alistair Carmichael has supported the British Lung
Foundation in its effort to raise awareness of Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease or COPD.
The
foundation said the lung condition affects more than three million
people in the UK and kills more than breast, bowel or prostate
cancer, yet it is preventable and treatable.
More than two of the three million remain undiagnosed. The British
Lung Foundation is trying to find them by raising awareness of the
disease.

symptoms of COPD, Mr Carmichael
said: "It is terrible that so many people might have this disease
but not know it. I want to help the British Lung Foundation find
these 'Missing Millions'."
I'll be nice to the wildlife this time
AN UP and coming Scottish crime writer will be visiting Shetland
later this month to read from his work and meet local writers and
book group members.
Stuart MacBride writes novels set in Aberdeen, the first two of
which, Cold Granite and Dying Light, have been popular
in the isles. Mr MacBride is using his visit to promote his new
thriller, Broken Skin.
"I'm really looking forward to visiting Shetland again after all
these years. Last time I was up there I was under three and zipped
into a wee sleeping bag so I couldn't get out and traumatise the
wildlife," he said.
"It's a beautiful island, and all the Shetlanders I've met have been
incredibly friendly. It's going to be great meeting them on their
own turf and getting to see a bit of the place.
"Not to mention drinking the whisky and I promise not to traumatise
the wildlife, well, maybe just a little bit."
The event is being held at Lerwick library on 23 May at 7.30 pm.
There will be live music and further readings by local authors.
