Doorstep warning

29 November, 2007

POLICE in Shetland are advising residents to be aware of the potential dangers of purchasing products or services from uninvited sales reps.

Both the police and trading standards have received calls recently about reps turning up on people's doorsteps mainly around Lerwick.

It is believed they could try to pressure people to take advantage of "time limited deals" when all the facts about them are unknown.

Also, warnings about disclosing any personal or financial details to these callers is being given and people are encouraged to make themselves aware of their rights regarding "doorstep buying" particularly about cancellation clauses.

Details of these rights can be obtained at www.shetland.gov.uk/tradingstandards or by calling 01595 744 887.

Information that needs to be passed on regarding doorstep sellers can be reported to the police, trading standards or the Safer Shetland Action Line on 01595 694 544
