Slightly disingenuous

8 April, 2008

BARRIE Jehu, when making point two of his letter (“A couple of comments”; SN 7/4/08), is being slightly disingenuous.

The reason why Welsh Nats were blowing up the water pipeline to Birmingham was the question of who actually owned what. The price of water was ancillary.

Birmingham City Council purchased land towards the end of the 19th century and built dams and pumping stations in Wales to provide fresh water for the city’s burgeoning population swelled by mass immigration from Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

Like Robert Mugabe, the Welsh Nats felt that the land and all its benefits belonged to the indigenous population, notwithstanding who bought and developed the land.

So presumably whoever owns the land on which the windfarms are to be built will either have the right to sell the electricity to the highest bidder or, depending on your point of view, insist the benefits are retained in Scotland - or should that be Shetland?
