STRONG north westerly winds south of
Shetland forced ferry operators NorthLink to cancel all sailings to
and from the northern isles yesterday (Tuesday).
However as the strongest winds avoided Shetland, power company
Scottish & Southern Energy cancelled the flights of two emergency
teams of engineers due to fly up to the isles yesterday morning to
deal with expected power cuts.
SSE's Shetland operations manager Bob Kelman said that when the
weather forecast changed they decided to keep the engineers in the
Highlands, where there was "more need".
The high winds around Orkney saw all NorthLink sailings between
Lerwick, Kirkwall, Aberdeen, Stromness and Scrabster cancelled.
Inter island sailings to Bressay and Fetlar were briefly affected by
winds yesterday afternoon.
All oil industry flights in and out of Scatsta airport had to be
stood down because of the wind direction, but flights in and out of
Sumburgh airport were on schedule. |

Forecasters predicted
better weather in Shetland today, but strong winds to return towards
the end of the week. |
