A SENIOR oil industry executive warned that some oil platforms in the North Sea are "falling apart" and there was a risk of serious accidents.

Ayman Asfari, chief executive of Petrofac, which owns North Sea fields and operates some fields on behalf of other companies, said he had seen several oil rigs which were in bad need of repair.

Speaking at the Oil and Money Conference, in London, he said some had been built in the 1970s and his company had seen workers actually falling through gratings on board rigs.

He warned that the falling oil price could deter oil companies from investing in safety and repair work, which could lead to serious accidents.
