REPAIR work has started on the far end of Shetland's Sumburgh
airport runway following damage that occurred during heavy storms in
January.
The eastern end of the runway was damaged when the sea came over a
protective wall just after New Year. Operations were not affected as
this part of the runway is used as a safety area.
Temporary repairs were done at the time, but following redesign work
it is now being permanently upgraded, with local firm Tulloch
Developments replacing the tarmac surface with reinforced concrete.
Sumburgh Airport manager Nigel Flaws said work should be completed
in four to six weeks. |
