31 March, 2009 SHETLAND
Islands Council’s vice convener Josie Simpson has been summoned to
Edinburgh tomorrow (Tuesday) to explain the authority’s decision to
pull its funding from Visit Scotland next year.
Last month the council voted to redirect the £425,000 it would
otherwise have given the national tourist body to a locally
controlled marketing organisation called Promoting Shetland.
The move has been replicated by council’s in Glasgow and Edinburgh,
and caused consternation in Holyrood where the SNP administration is
trying to attract visitors from across the globe to Homecoming 2009,
celebrating the 250th anniversary of poet Robbie Burns’ birth.
Tomorrow Mr Simpson will join members from Edinburgh City Council to
give evidence before the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and
Tourism Committee. |

Speaking yesterday, Mr
Simpson said: “I don’t think there is anything to worry about
because when we down there two or three weeks ago we got a very good
response from the minister Jim Mather.” |
