PETER Hamilton's interest in Viking Energy is very welcome. However, some key
facts get in the way of what appears to be a good story.
Viking Energy Partnership is a 50/50 partnership between Viking Energy Ltd and
SSE. The fact that 10 per cent of Viking Energy Ltd is owned by private
individuals is irrelevant. Viking Energy Ltd is fully controlled by Shetland
Islands Council.
A 50/50 partnership means neither party has a controlling share. What may
"seemingly" look like a 60/40 position is in fact a 50/50 position with all
decisions effectively requiring unanimity.
What is being consulted upon at the moment is 192 potential sites for 3.6MW wind
turbines. A 600 MW windfarm, based on 3.6 MW turbines, would require the
development of no more than 168 of these, or alternative, sites.
The ultimate progress of the project is dependent on planning consent for the
windfarm and a connection to the national electricity grid. There will also be a
requirement for long term arrangements to sell the power.
The Viking Energy project is being explored as a means to bring significant
economic value and economic activity to Shetland. The community's involvement in
ownership of the project is about maximising the long term benefits to the
people of Shetland from the development of such a project here.
