I AM dismayed that some Shetland councillors are even contemplating
voting against such an imaginative and worthwhile project as the
Mareel cinema and music venue.
To cite the horny excuse/reason that the money should be spent on
care homes and schools connects them with my fellow councillors in
Aberdeen who either do not understand, or do not wish to understand
the differences between capital and revenue budgets.
The people of Shetland deserve this facility. They, like the
citizens of Kirkwall, have lived happily with fuel tanks in their
midst for generations.
A cinema is sairly needed, and the educational benefits of a music
centre for the already talented youngsters of the Shetland should
and must be provided. It will enhance Shetland's reputation, enable
more recordings of your musical heritage, promote jobs and encourage
needed youngsters to remain on the islands.
Do not allow petty bickering to scupper a very worthwhile project.
