ABOUT 50 of Shetland’s secondary school pupils screened
self-produced movies about climate change at Lerwick Town Hall
yesterday (Monday).
Students from Scalloway, Aith, Mid Yell and Baltasound junior high
schools showed short documentaries about their local areas to an
audience including councillors and members of the SIC’s environment
forum.
The Scottish Government’s chief scientific advisor Anne Glover
attended to give a speech highlighting how important science is in
combating climate change.
The event was the culmination of a project to promote sustainable
development across the isles. Subjects covered included energy and
houses, global warming, coastal erosion and rising sea levels.
Councillor Rick Nickerson said: “It was an excellent morning. I
certainly feel the young people had taken some time to consider the
issues.
“They obviously had a good time doing the films as well as the
serious side of it. The presentation |

by Anne
Glover was very enlightening in terms of the challenges before us
over the next few years in addressing climate change issues.”
Sandwick pupils were also due to show their film, but could not
because of technical problems. |
